Rest in Peace Joey (2006–2026): Remembering a Young Athlete with a Bright Future
The Radford University community was left heartbroken after the unexpected passing of freshman baseball player Joey Raccuia. At only nineteen years old, Joey was just beginning a journey that many believed would become a remarkable college baseball career.
Those who knew him remember far more than his athletic ability. Joey was known for his kindness, dedication, and quiet determination. Whether on the baseball field, in the classroom, or among friends, he carried himself with humility and respect.
Although his time was tragically short, his memory continues to live on in the hearts of teammates, coaches, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Childhood Filled with Baseball Dreams
Baseball had always been part of Joey’s life.
Growing up, he spent countless hours around baseball fields, learning the game and developing a deep love for it. From an early age, Joey showed a natural connection to the sport. He practiced constantly, determined to improve his skills and reach his goals.
Friends and family often described him as a young athlete who truly loved the game. For Joey, baseball was not only about competition—it was about discipline, teamwork, and passion.
His dedication was evident in the way he trained. While others might have stopped practicing once the game ended, Joey often stayed longer, working on his pitching, fielding, and hitting.
Those close to him say he believed that success came from effort and patience.
