Part 2: A Discovery Inside the Drum

The washing machine started slowly. Water filled the drum, and the motor began turning with a low humming sound.

For the first few minutes, everything seemed fine.

Then Graham heard something unusual.

A sharp metallic clink echoed from inside the machine.

At first, he assumed it was a coin left in a pocket. That kind of thing happened often enough. Still, the sound seemed heavier than loose change.

Curious, Graham paused the cycle and opened the lid.

He reached inside the drum and moved the clothes around until his fingers touched something small and solid.

When he pulled his hand back out, he realized it was a ring.

Not just any ring.

It was a gold band with a small diamond set carefully on top. Even in the dim laundry room light, the stone caught a sparkle that suggested it might be valuable.

The children gathered around him immediately.

Hazel leaned closer, her eyes wide with excitement.

“It’s beautiful,” she said.

Milo examined it with curiosity. “Do you think it’s real?”

But Nora, the quietest of the three, noticed something different. She turned the ring slowly and looked at the inside of the band.

“There’s writing inside,” she said.

Graham took the ring and read the small engraving.

“To Claire, with love. Always. – L.”

For a moment, the room fell silent.

The ring clearly belonged to someone. It wasn’t just jewelry—it carried a story, a promise made between two people.

Hazel called it a “princess ring,” while Milo joked about finding treasure in a washing machine.

But Nora asked a question that made Graham stop thinking about money for a moment.

“Is that someone’s forever ring?” she asked softly.

Her words hung in the air.

Because Graham had already thought about something else.

If the ring was real gold—and if the diamond was genuine—it might be worth hundreds of dollars. Maybe even more.

That money could help in many ways. It could pay overdue bills, buy groceries, or replace the kids’ worn-out shoes.

For someone living paycheck to paycheck, opportunities like that rarely appear.

But Nora’s simple question changed the way Graham looked at the ring.

If it truly belonged to someone’s love story, could he really keep it?
