The Strange Night Routine
About a week after we came home from the hospital, I woke up around two in the morning and noticed something unusual.
Daniel wasn’t in bed.
At first, I assumed he was in the kitchen or checking on Ethan.
But when I walked down the hallway, the house was completely quiet.
Then I heard the soft sound of the front door closing.
The next morning, I asked him where he had gone.
“Just needed some fresh air,” he replied quickly.
His answer seemed harmless enough.
But the same thing happened again the next night.
And the night after that.
Each time, he slipped out quietly after midnight.
Each time, he returned about an hour later.
By the fifth night, my thoughts began racing.
Was he overwhelmed by fatherhood?
Was something bothering him that he didn’t want to share?
Or was there something else happening entirely?
Eventually, I realized I needed answers.
The Night I Followed Him
One evening, I decided to stay awake.
I pretended to fall asleep early and waited quietly.
Just after midnight, Daniel slowly got out of bed.
He dressed quietly and left the house.
A minute later, I grabbed my coat and keys.
Keeping a safe distance, I followed his car through the quiet streets.
He drove farther than I expected.
Past the grocery store we always visited. Past the park where we used to take evening walks.
Nearly forty minutes later, he turned into the parking lot of a small community building.
The sign outside read:
“Family Support Center.”
I parked across the street and watched.
Daniel sat in his car for several minutes before finally walking inside.
My heart pounded as I stepped closer to the building.
Through one of the windows, I could see a group of people sitting in a circle.
And Daniel was among them.
